Self-Adaptive System
Also known as: Self-Adapting System, Adaptive Interface
A software or hardware system that automatically monitors user behaviour and adjusts its configuration or interface to better suit the user's needs without requiring explicit manual intervention. In accessibility, self-adaptive systems can detect changes in a user's motor abilities, cognitive load, or environmental conditions and modify input sensitivity, interface layout, or interaction parameters accordingly. While these systems can reduce configuration burden, they must balance responsiveness to changing needs with stability and predictability, as unexpected changes can confuse or frustrate users.
