Focus and Context

Also known as: Focus+Context, Detail in Context

An information visualization and interaction design principle that simultaneously presents detailed information about a specific item of interest (focus) alongside an overview of the surrounding structure or environment (context). In accessibility, the focus+context approach is valuable for non-visual navigation of complex structures: for example, presenting the name and properties of the current tree node (focus) while also conveying its position relative to the root, parent, siblings, and subtree size (context). This dual presentation helps users maintain orientation and make informed navigation decisions without needing to see the entire structure at once.
