Subitizing

The rapid, accurate perception of the number of items in a small group without counting, typically for quantities up to about four or five. Subitizing is considered a core numerical ability that contributes to number sense development. Individuals with dyscalculia often have impaired subitizing ability, meaning they cannot instantly perceive small quantities and must rely on counting even for very small groups of objects. This difficulty is one reason why graphical and manipulative-based approaches to mathematics instruction can be beneficial, as they provide alternative ways to understand quantity.
