Non-Verbal Vocalization

Also known as: Non-Speech Vocalization, Vocal Gesture, Non-speech Vocalisation, Non-Speech Vocalisation

A sound produced by the voice that is not a spoken word, such as a sustained vowel sound ("Ahhhhh"), hum, or other vocal noise. In assistive technology and alternative input contexts, non-verbal vocalizations can serve as continuous control signals for cursor movement or other interface actions. A key advantage over verbal commands is that non-verbal vocalizations can be started and stopped instantaneously — the system responds to the presence or absence of sound without needing speech recognition processing, eliminating the delays associated with recognizing and interpreting spoken words.
