Online Focus Group

Also known as: Virtual Focus Group, Remote Focus Group

A qualitative research method in which a group of participants discusses a topic through an online platform rather than meeting in person. Online focus groups are particularly valuable for accessibility research because they remove physical barriers — such as transportation, mobility limitations, and geographic distance — that often prevent people with disabilities from participating in traditional in-person focus groups. They also allow participants to use their own assistive technologies in their natural environments (home, school, or workplace), providing more authentic data about real-world technology use patterns.
