Indian Language Accessibility

Also known as: Indic Language Accessibility

The set of challenges and solutions involved in making digital technology accessible to people with disabilities who use Indian languages such as Hindi, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Marathi, and others. Indian languages use complex scripts with features like consonant conjuncts (formed through halant characters), context-dependent character rendering, and diverse writing systems that differ fundamentally from Latin-based scripts. These complexities mean that assistive technologies designed for English — including screen readers, Braille translation systems, and text-to-speech engines — cannot simply be adapted for Indian languages but require specialized approaches. With over 13 million visually impaired people in India alone, Indian language accessibility is a critical global inclusion challenge.
