Gist Summary

Also known as: Gist, Page Gist, Web Page Summary

A gist summary is a brief, automatically or manually generated overview of a document or web page that captures its central theme or focus, enabling a reader to quickly assess the content's relevance without reading the entire text. In accessibility contexts, gist summaries are particularly valuable for screen reader users who otherwise must listen to substantial portions of a web page before determining whether it is useful for their current task. Research has shown that short summaries of around four sentences, generated using simple extraction algorithms, can effectively reduce cognitive overload and support faster browsing decisions for visually impaired users.
