Talking Head
Also known as: Virtual Talking Head, Animated Face, 3D Talking Head, Virtual Speech Tutor
A talking head is a computer-generated 3D or 2D animated representation of a human face and articulatory system that produces visible speech movements synchronised with audio output. In accessibility and speech therapy contexts, talking heads are particularly valuable because they can display internal articulatory features — such as tongue position, palate shape, and jaw movement — that are normally hidden during natural speech. This capability makes them useful tools for speech training, especially for individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing, as they provide visual articulatory cues that supplement or replace auditory feedback. Advanced talking heads use data from MRI and Electromagnetic Articulography to ensure anatomically correct articulation models.
