Mispronunciation Detection
Also known as: Pronunciation Error Detection, Mispronunciation Diagnosis
Mispronunciation detection is the automated process of identifying errors in a speaker's pronunciation by comparing their speech production against a target or expected utterance. In assistive technology and speech training systems, mispronunciation detection goes beyond simple speech recognition by not only identifying that an error occurred but characterising the nature of the error — for example, whether the tongue was positioned too far forward or too high. This granular analysis enables corrective feedback that instructs the user on how to adjust their articulation. The technology typically relies on acoustic analysis, and increasingly on audio-visual approaches that combine speech signal processing with facial feature tracking to improve robustness.
