Active Exploration
Also known as: User-Directed Exploration
An interaction paradigm in non-visual interfaces where users physically control their navigation through information, discovering content by directing a pointer, stylus, or finger across a surface or through a virtual space. In contrast to passive exploration, where the entire representation is presented to the user at once, active exploration allows users to build a mental model incrementally by choosing where to move and what to examine. This approach is particularly valuable for making spatial and relational information like graphs, maps, and diagrams accessible to people who are blind, as it preserves spatial relationships and gives users agency over the pace and focus of their exploration.
