Text Generation Rate

Also known as: TGR, Text Entry Rate, Text Entry Speed

The speed at which a user produces text, typically measured in words per minute (WPM) or characters per second. Text generation rate is a key performance metric in assistive technology evaluation because it captures the overall efficiency of a text entry system, accounting for both the physical input actions and any cognitive overhead. Importantly, TGR can differ from keystroke rate: word prediction systems reduce the number of keystrokes needed but may not increase TGR if the time spent scanning and selecting predictions (decision delay) offsets the keystroke savings. For users of AAC devices and alternative text entry methods, TGR is often the most meaningful measure of communicative efficiency.
