Community Navigation
Also known as: Community Travel, Community Mobility
The ability to plan, initiate, and complete trips within one's community, including getting to transit points on time, using public transportation, and accessing services at destinations. For people with cognitive disabilities such as traumatic brain injury, community navigation involves executive function skills including time management, inventory management (remembering necessary items), route following, and problem-solving when plans change. Barriers to community navigation are a major contributor to social isolation among people with disabilities.
