Portable Reader

Also known as: Portable Reading Device, Portable Reading Machine

An assistive technology device that combines a camera or scanner with optical character recognition and text-to-speech output to enable blind or visually impaired users to read printed text independently in any location. Unlike traditional flatbed scanner-based reading systems that are bulky and confined to a desk, portable readers are designed to be carried and used in various settings such as classrooms, offices, or while travelling. Examples include camera-based systems mounted on pedestal supports that allow books to be read face-up in a natural position.
