Bluetooth

Also known as: BLE, Bluetooth Low Energy

A short-range wireless communication standard used to exchange data between devices over distances of up to approximately 30 metres. In accessibility, Bluetooth is widely used in assistive technology: hearing aids use Bluetooth to stream audio directly from phones and televisions; item-tracking tags help visually impaired people locate lost objects; Bluetooth beacons support indoor wayfinding and navigation for people with visual or cognitive impairments; switches and alternative input devices connect wirelessly to computers and mobile devices; and refreshable Braille displays communicate with screen readers. Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), introduced in Bluetooth 4.0, enables longer battery life in small devices, making it particularly suited for wearable and portable assistive technologies.
