Electronic Textbook

Also known as: E-Textbook, Digital Textbook, Interactive Textbook

A digital version of an educational textbook that goes beyond simply reproducing printed content on screen by offering interactive features such as searchable text, bookmarking, embedded exercises and assessments, multimedia content, annotations, progress tracking, and adaptive presentation. For accessibility, electronic textbooks offer significant advantages over print: they can be rendered through speech synthesis, displayed on Braille devices, presented with adjustable font sizes and colours, and navigated through multiple modalities. However, accessible electronic textbooks require deliberate design — merely digitising content does not guarantee accessibility. Standards like DAISY and NIMAS provide frameworks for structuring accessible digital educational content, and platforms like Starlight demonstrate how interactive e-books can be made concurrently accessible to both sighted and visually impaired students.
