Voicemail

Also known as: Voice Mail, Voice Messaging

Voicemail is a telecommunications service that records an audio message from a caller when the called party is unavailable, for later retrieval by the recipient. Accessibility considerations include: reliance on hearing to listen to messages (a barrier for Deaf and hard-of-hearing users, mitigated by visual voicemail and automatic transcription), difficulty of the retrieval interface itself (multi-level menus navigated with touch-tone digits can be inaccessible to users with cognitive, motor, or memory disabilities), and the cognitive load of composing and understanding time-limited audio messages. Visual voicemail, which lists messages with text transcripts and allows non-linear access, is widely cited as a major accessibility improvement over traditional sequential-playback voicemail.
