On-Demand Simplification

Also known as: On-demand text simplification, User-initiated simplification

An interaction pattern for Automatic Text Simplification reading-assistance tools in which the user explicitly requests a simpler version of a word, phrase, or sentence — typically via hover, click, or tap — rather than having the system pre-apply simplifications to the page before the user sees it. On-demand simplification preserves the original text for reference, supports vocabulary learning, and increases the user's sense of control and autonomy. Empirical studies with Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing adults and with people with dyslexia have found that on-demand designs receive significantly higher acceptance and willingness-to-use ratings than fully automatic pre-applied simplification, even when objective comprehension scores do not differ.
