Handicapping
Also known as: Handicap System, Player Balancing
A mechanism that asymmetrically adjusts game or contest conditions so competitors of differing ability have more equal chances to win or participate meaningfully. Long established in sports such as golf, horse racing, and archery, handicapping is distinct from matchmaking in that it modifies what happens inside a match rather than choosing who plays. In digital accessibility contexts, handicapping is relevant to competitive video games as a means of accommodating players whose apparent ability is reduced by disability, low-end hardware, limited practice time, or other environmental factors, enabling fuller participation in online competitive ecosystems.
