Enhanced Activities of Daily Living
Also known as: EADLs, EADL (gerontology), Advanced Activities of Daily Living
In gerontology and human-robot interaction research, the highest tier of everyday activities — higher-order social, recreational, and civic pursuits that enable full participation in society, such as using computers and the internet, volunteering, engaging in hobbies, pursuing education, and maintaining social connections. EADLs sit above Activities of Daily Living (ADLs, self-care) and Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADLs, independent-living tasks) in the Rogers–Meyer–Walker–Fisk framework. Assistive and social technologies that target companionship, entertainment, or video communication are supporting EADLs. Note that the abbreviation EADL is also used in assistive technology for “Electronic Aids to Daily Living”, an unrelated concept.
