Phantom Limb Pain
Also known as: PLP
Phantom limb pain is a chronic pain condition in which an individual experiences painful sensations appearing to come from a limb (or other body part) that has been amputated or is no longer functional. The pain is real and neurological in origin, arising from reorganisation of the central nervous system following amputation. It is a significant barrier to rehabilitation and quality of life for many amputees. Emerging AI-XR treatments — such as augmented reality systems that use machine learning to facilitate phantom motor execution — have shown clinical promise by helping the brain relearn movement patterns and reduce pain without medication.
