Immersive Analytics

Also known as: 3D Data Visualisation, Spatial Analytics, Immersive Visualisation

Immersive analytics is the application of interactive 3D, virtual reality (VR), or augmented reality (AR) technologies to support data exploration, analysis, and decision-making. By leveraging spatial context, immersive analytics aims to overcome the limitations of flat 2D visualisations — particularly for large, complex, or multi-dimensional datasets. In accessibility research, immersive analytics raises important concerns: 3D spatial interfaces can impose high cognitive load, create orientation and wayfinding difficulties, and may be inaccessible to users with visual impairments, motor disabilities, or vestibular conditions triggered by head-mounted displays. Effective immersive analytics interfaces require clear visual cues, progress tracking, and fallback text-based interaction modes to support diverse users.
