Pain Invalidation

Also known as: chronic pain disbelief, pain dismissal

The experience of having one's pain dismissed, disbelieved, or minimised by others, including healthcare professionals, family members, and social contacts. Pain invalidation is a pervasive barrier for people with chronic pain conditions, particularly primary pain syndromes such as fibromyalgia where pain has no visible physical cause. It leads to heightened psychological distress, loss of relationships, social isolation, reduced engagement with healthcare, and worsening of the pain experience itself. Designing technology that helps people externalise and communicate their pain -- making the pain visible -- is an important accessibility consideration for chronic health management tools.
