Pain Communication

Also known as: pain expression, communicating pain

The verbal and non-verbal processes through which a person conveys their pain experience to others, including family members, carers, and healthcare professionals. Chronic pain presents particular communication challenges because it is inherently subjective and invisible, often resisting adequate verbal description. Barriers include linguistic limitations, social norms around complaining, power imbalances in clinical settings, and scepticism from others who cannot observe the pain directly. Effective pain communication is essential for receiving appropriate clinical care and social support; technology that helps people document, visualise, or signal their pain experience can reduce these barriers and improve outcomes.
