Large Language Models

Also known as: LLMs, foundation models

Large language models are AI systems trained on vast corpora of text data using transformer-based neural network architectures, enabling them to generate, summarize, translate, and reason about natural language. In accessibility contexts, LLMs power conversational assistants such as ChatGPT, screen reader description generators, and plain-language simplification tools that can reduce cognitive and literacy barriers for users with disabilities. While LLMs offer significant accessibility potential, they also present risks including hallucination of incorrect information, lack of real-time data access, and inconsistent performance for users of augmentative and alternative communication devices.
