Virtual Collaboration

Also known as: remote collaboration, virtual teamwork

Working together across distance using digital tools—synchronous meetings on platforms like Zoom, Microsoft Teams, or Google Meet, and asynchronous channels like shared documents, Slack, and issue trackers. For accessibility, virtual collaboration can remove physical barriers and enable participation through features like captioning, screen-reader-compatible interfaces, and flexible scheduling, but it also introduces new barriers when tools lack accessibility, when social cues are harder to read, or when access labour shifts invisibly onto team members. Effective virtual collaboration in mixed-ability teams depends on both tool accessibility and inclusive team practices.
