Navigation
The task of moving through an environment to reach a destination, encompassing route planning, mode selection, real-time decision-making, and responding to obstacles. In accessibility research, navigation is often paired with wayfinding (the embodied, situated practice of orientation during movement) and is supported by a combination of digital tools (GPS apps, transit apps), assistive technologies (white cane, guide dog, beacons), Orientation and Mobility training, and human assistance. Designing for accessible navigation means supporting the whole "navigation space," not just turn-by-turn routing.
