Personal Independence Payment
Also known as: PIP
A UK non-means-tested, points-based disability benefit for working-age adults that helps with the extra costs of long-term physical or mental health conditions. PIP has two components — Daily Living and Mobility — and is awarded based on functional assessments conducted via form, phone, or in-person appointment. The scheme has drawn sustained criticism for dehumanising assessments, high refusal rates subsequently overturned on appeal (around two-thirds in recent figures), and application forms that are inaccessible to people with aphasia, cognitive disabilities, or limited literacy.
