Auslan
Also known as: Australian Sign Language
Australian Sign Language, the sign language of the Australian Deaf community. Auslan is a natural language with its own grammar and lexicon, unrelated to English and distinct from American Sign Language (ASL); it is historically related to British Sign Language and New Zealand Sign Language (together forming the BANZSL group) and uses a two-handed manual alphabet. Auslan is recognised as a community language in Australia and is used in education, interpreting, and public services, though there is a persistent shortage of qualified interpreters.
