Posthumanism

Also known as: Posthumanist Design, More-than-Human Design

A theoretical orientation in design and HCI that decenters the human as the sole agent of value and instead considers nonhuman animals, plants, ecosystems, and even technological artifacts as participants in design contexts. Posthumanist and more-than-human framings push designers to consider coexistence, multispecies care, and ecological responsibility rather than only human task efficiency. In accessibility, posthumanist thinking informs assistive technologies for nature engagement that aim to integrate harmoniously with the environment - using natural materials, biodegradable markers, or audio that does not mask the existing soundscape - rather than imposing a built overlay on it.
