Academic Accessibility

The degree to which the tools, publications, venues, and institutional practices of academic research and higher education are usable by disabled students, faculty, and researchers. Academic accessibility spans scholarly PDFs and figures, reference and qualitative-analysis software, conference venues and presentation norms, peer-review and manuscript-submission platforms, laboratory and fieldwork infrastructure, and evaluation criteria for promotion and grants. It is often contrasted with 'individual accommodation' framings: rather than asking disabled scholars to request exceptions from otherwise-inaccessible infrastructure, academic accessibility treats inclusion as a systemic responsibility of institutions, publishers, tool vendors, and the research community.
