Distraction Blocker

Also known as: Focus app, Website blocker, Digital self-control tool, DSCT

A category of digital well-being software designed to restrict access to distracting applications, websites, or notifications so that users can sustain focus on work or study. Distraction blockers range from operating-system features such as Apple Screen Time and Android Focus Mode to third-party apps like Forest, Freedom, StayFocusd, and SelfControl, and often combine blocking with timer-based focus sessions (e.g., Pomodoro intervals). For neurodivergent users, the effectiveness and experience of these tools is shaped by how well their rigidity, time-boxing, and framing accommodate non-linear work rhythms, self-regulation strategies, and diverse cognitive styles — design choices that can either scaffold autonomy or reinforce self-stigma.
