Epilepsy

Also known as: Seizure Disorder

A chronic neurological condition characterized by recurrent, unprovoked seizures caused by abnormal electrical activity in the brain. Epilepsy affects roughly 1% of the population globally and spans a wide range of seizure types and severities, with some people experiencing sensory, cognitive, or mobility effects and others having few visible signs between seizures. For digital accessibility, the most widely known concern is photosensitive epilepsy — WCAG 2.3.1 limits flashing content to no more than three flashes per second to reduce seizure risk. Beyond flashing content, epilepsy intersects with accessibility through cognitive fatigue, medication side effects on memory and attention, and workplace or transportation limitations following a seizure.
