Community Health Worker
Also known as: CHW, Lay Health Worker
A frontline healthcare provider who is a trusted member of the community they serve and who delivers basic health services, education, and referrals, typically with limited formal training. Community health workers extend the reach of formal health systems into homes and villages, and are essential to Community-Based Rehabilitation, maternal and child health programs, and chronic disease management, especially in low- and middle-income countries. Examples include Thailand's Village Health Volunteers, India's ASHA workers, and similar cadres worldwide.
