Self-Reflection

Also known as: Reflective Practice

The deliberate process of examining one's own thoughts, feelings, actions, and experiences to gain insight, adjust behaviour, or support personal growth. Self-reflection is central to therapeutic models (cognitive-behavioural therapy, mindfulness, reminiscence therapy), educational pedagogy, and wellbeing apps. For accessibility, self-reflection tools must be designed so that disabled users — including those with cognitive, learning, and sensory disabilities — can engage without disproportionate cognitive load, with modality options (voice, image, sign language, music) and AI-supported scaffolding. Overly prescriptive or positivity-biased reflection prompts can be counter-productive, as users may need space to process negative experiences factually rather than reframe them.
