Phenomenology
Also known as: Phenomenological Inquiry
Phenomenology is a philosophical tradition and research methodology concerned with the structures of lived, first-person experience. Originating with Husserl, Heidegger, and Merleau-Ponty, it emphasizes how phenomena appear to consciousness rather than what they are in objective or third-person terms. In HCI and accessibility research, phenomenology underpins methods such as Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA), autoethnography, and soma design; it is particularly useful for understanding disability and sensory experience from the insider's perspective, where medical or objective measures fail to capture the quality of lived experience.
