Smart Ring
Also known as: Ring-Form Wearable
A wearable computing device worn on a finger, typically combining sensors (motion, biometric, or camera) and/or actuators (vibration, kinesthetic feedback) in a ring form factor. In accessibility, smart rings have been proposed as discreet input devices, vibrotactile navigation aids (e.g., FingerSight, GuidingBand), and — as in the NURing project — as ring-mounted camera and actuation platforms for closed-loop fingertip guidance for blind and vision-impaired users. Compared to head- or wrist-worn wearables, ring-form factors can leverage fingertip proximity for both sensing the world and actuating the hand without occupying the fingerpad.
