Diaphragmatic Breathing
Also known as: Belly Breathing, Abdominal Breathing
A breathing technique that emphasises movement of the abdominal wall and diaphragm during inspiration rather than the accessory muscles of the neck and shoulders. By engaging the diaphragm more fully, diaphragmatic breathing increases tidal volume, decreases respiratory frequency, and improves ventilatory efficiency. It is widely used in pulmonary rehabilitation for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and other respiratory conditions, and is also taught for stress reduction and voice work.
