Workplace accessibility
Also known as: Employment accessibility, Accessible workplace
The design of work environments, tools, processes, and practices that enable people with disabilities to participate fully and effectively in employment. Workplace accessibility encompasses physical accommodations (accessible offices, ergonomic equipment), digital accessibility (screen reader-compatible software, captioned meetings), and organizational practices (flexible work arrangements, inclusive communication norms). Research shows that inaccessible digital collaboration tools — including videoconferencing, project management, and messaging platforms — can create compounding barriers that affect not only daily productivity but also career advancement and workforce retention for employees with disabilities.
