Hand-Over-Hand Technique

Also known as: Hand-Over-Hand Guidance, Hand-Over-Hand Training

A training and communication method commonly used with individuals who are blind or have visual impairments, where a trainer places their hands over the learner's hands to physically guide them through the motions of a task. This technique allows the learner to feel the correct hand movements, positioning, and pressure required for a skill while the trainer maintains control. Hand-over-hand guidance is widely used in teaching daily living skills, vocational training, and educational settings. While effective for initial skill acquisition, it is sometimes considered less empowering than hand-under-hand techniques because it gives the trainer rather than the learner primary control of the movement.
