CART
Also known as: Communication Access Real-Time Translation, Real-Time Captioning, Stenography, Real-Time Stenography
A real-time captioning service where a trained stenographer uses a specialized keyboard to transcribe speech into text as it is spoken, typically with only a few seconds of delay. CART provides word-for-word transcription of spoken content for deaf and hard of hearing individuals in settings such as classrooms, meetings, conferences, and courtrooms. CART reporters achieve high accuracy (95%+) but require extensive training and are more expensive than alternative systems like C-Print or automated speech recognition. The text is typically displayed on a computer screen, projected display, or personal device, allowing the DHH individual to read what is being said in near-real-time.
