Frenchay Aphasia Screening Test

Also known as: FAST

A brief, standardized assessment tool used to screen for the presence and severity of aphasia in stroke survivors and others with acquired language impairments. The FAST evaluates four language areas: comprehension, expression, reading, and writing, providing scores out of 30. Lower scores indicate more severe impairment. Originally developed by Enderby et al. (1986), it is designed to be administered quickly by non-specialists such as nurses or researchers, making it practical for clinical and research settings. The test helps determine appropriate communication support and is commonly used in accessibility research to characterize participant populations.
