Journaling

Also known as: Diary Writing, Reflective Writing

The regular practice of recording personal thoughts, feelings, and experiences in written, spoken, visual, or musical form. Journaling has documented benefits for mental health, emotion regulation, self-insight, and identity construction, and is widely used in therapy, education, and recovery contexts. For accessibility, journaling interfaces may need to support non-text modalities (sign language video, audio, drawing, music), accommodate motor and cognitive disabilities (speech-to-text input, reduced-prompt scaffolds, no time pressure), and respect privacy given the sensitive nature of journal content. Digital journaling apps increasingly incorporate conversational agents or generative AI as scaffolds for users who struggle to get started or express feelings independently.
